  • Mom bought a pregnancy test from Vons but waited for Dad and till 8/31/1999
  • Heard the news of miscarriage from Chi Phuong (Beta) (Vietnam)
  • 08/31/1999: 2:40am Mom could not sleep. Told Dad to start the test. Went to peepee, Voila, you made the virgin news to our little world. Dad scanned the result into the Web. This page was born that early morning. Started to learn about sleepless nights to come.
  • Mom could not go back to sleep, just lay there waiting for the first sunlight to call the world. She first call Santa Ana , talked with Xi and Me. Then called BaMe, talked with Ba (too early for Me)
  • Dad went to work, e-mailed the whole family to inform about the result of the home test. Everybody but Co Mimi responsed with a congratulation. Read this. Mimi did not learn about that until a day later when she called home. She 's to busy to set up and moved to a new house in Lexington , Kentucky.
  • Mom called to get the first appointment for prenatal care. The obstetrician was Dr. XXX of Pomerado Hospital. The appointment is 11:30am Thursday 09/02/1999.
  • Mom called GreatGrandMa at Irvine, wanted to inform her about your news, but got a Bye quickly. GreatGrandMa didnot want to talk about that so early. Superstitious, uh huh?

  • The next 2 weeks, Dad so busy that he cannot update this page
  • Uncle Beta and Uncle Top, aunt Hong came home (San Diego) on Labor Day weekends (9/3-6/99). Mom and Dad had to go to Santa Ana on Saturday (birthday of your cousins Amy and Het). Saturday night, uncle Alpha bought sushi, sashimi. We had a small re-union dinner without Co Mimi. You bet that Mom (and you) are star of the show.
  • I joked that Mom got every symptom described in the book, "morning sickness". It's true, though.
  • Sunday, uncle Beta drove GrandMe to Irvine and back with GreatGrandMa. Uncle Top and Aunt Hong treat everybody a sea-bass dinner.
  • Week 7, Monday, Sept 6, 1999. We all (including GreatGrandMa) went to the beach. Mom got out, touch the water, but it's too cold for her. (I guessed that triggered the diarhea the next 2 days for Mom.) After that we all went to uncle Beta dinner, the first with family after his wedding in Vietnam, so we can offiacially toast to him and his wife.
  • You can guess what was next. Next morning, Mom drank 2 cups of whole milk without meal. Then TaoThao drove her crazy. 10 times until 2:00 am. She's afraid not to take medicine. Dad had to drive down Mira Mesa to buy Pho, and bought some bread, cookies, sweet for her. Wednesday was better, about 6-7 times.
  • Cannot remmember Thursday, mom went interview with some company in Mira Mesa. Mom really like that because it was almost like GishBiomedical where she worked before. Friday 9/10/99, Mom went to great uncle Minh's house to pick up GreatGrandMa, cha Tom.... Dad, Mom, and GreatGrandMa left for Irvine 3:00pm. Mom an chay that day, but grandMa and everybody in Santa Ana did not (Forgot?) She got some rash on her shoulder, dad joked about 'not used to leather of Infinity QX4'. She got her hair-do for aunt Cynthia Thu's wedding. The hair dresser did a sloppy job to spray stuff over Mom's shirt. Rash activated and Mom was itchy 'ngua' all day long.
  • Saturday was so busy for the wedding. Sunday was so busy for the vietnam tour. Mom got a papaya and a hybrid cherimoya home after seeing off grandMa to Vietnam.
  • Week 8, Monday,Sept 13, 1999, Mom called Lynne, trying to switch the doctor to Dr. Reading. In the evening, after dinner Dad and Mom took a stroll along the usual route. Mom got a pain in her right hip. Came home that night, she got some cramps in the right lower abdomen, and some spotting too. Urged to call doctor the next morning, but resisted. Mom was afraid of losing you. She even dreamt, and in her dream, she saw her dad, and her brother-in-law Vu.... We went to Pho 79 then GrandMe. After talking with Belle, mom got a litlle bit easier on her feeling.
  • Wednesday, Mom got better. Mom used to answer dad by "No". So Dad called you "No". Everytime Mom say that word, dad reminded her that you gonna wake up and trouble Mom !!!
  • Dad brought the Z28 to shop to have an regular oil change: oil leak, transmission oil burn, serpentine belt crack ... Then brought to another shop to have transmission service and radiator flush. It showed that back trainy seal leak and some kind of leak in the front. Brought to dealer, change trainy seal, did dye test, rented a contour, Mommy sick, ren hu hu. Booked a trip to Palm Springs. Don't know if mom can go, or the car finished in time! Mom walked in the morning under morning rain and breathed the bad stuff coming out of earth. I guess she's nhong nheo. You have to learn Vienamese to understand. OK
  • We went to see some new houses around RB. So expensive I can only afford a dog's house around here. You have to sleep in the dog's house while Mommy and Daddy under the star. Actually, mommy got a very nice sleeping bag called cat's meow. We will invite Ong Noi and Ba Noi to live with us, or at least provide some room for their convenience to see you, huh?
  • Week 9. Sat-Mon Sept/18-20, Mom and Dad and You travelled to Palm Desert. Intrawest are selling some timeshares and they invites us overthere. OK we go. First trip for you. You "quay" so Mom had to crash pee-pee in Lobster Co. Restaurant. Dad went to pee-pee in Hyatt, though!
  • Next morning, we went to listen the crap for 2 hour, then off we went our ways. Dad showed off by making scambled eggs without oil. Mom really liked it (egg or dad's skill?) Hey, Mom brought you going shopping. Desert Premium Outlet on Field Ave, off Highway 10. You even got your first chicken McDonald six-piece. On the way back, we stopped by Palm Spring Aerial Tram station. After Dad parked the car, Mom opened the door and rolled out into the next car !! That's why she's so afraid to bring you up the mountain by Tram, Oh well next time!
  • Afraid that you're hungry, Mom bought soup and rice on the way back (supper!) After finishing dinner, we could not rest. Went down for a swim, too cold, went to indulge ourself in spa. Do you feel the heat? Mom could not sleep that night. She watched TV all night long !
  • Next morning, driving home on the back road 74-371-79-15. Crooked road and save at least 40 miles. End your first 400mi trip, NO.
  • 10 1/2 weeks. Thu Phân Sept 23, 1999: Mom got the Pap Smear and cervix test. Mom weighed 106 lbs. Gained 5 1/2 lbs in 3 weeks !!! The exam went well and Lynne even tried to listen to your heartbeat. But you were too lazy in there, weren't you? GrandBa and GrandMe felt good to learn about the test; "Official News Release" again
  • Mom should watch out not to eat too much sugar and make you a hyperactive one! By the way, Dad also gained about 2-4 lbs (136lbs). Dad should have to go visit you regularly, shouldn't he?
  • Want to see Mom and you eating durian? Click here and here.

  • Week 10, Monday, Sept 20, 1999. Monday night Your Mom Cried all night over a fuss, then hit her head on to the wall, then forgot to breathe, then dreamt... Maybe you started kicking her inside! Then Tuesday night, there's a good news from aunt Hong that you're gonna have a cousin, maybe two, a few week younger than you are. Mom started taking picture of herself and you inside!!! Wednesday morning, Mom went jogging under 90+ weather. Guess what? Her face looked like burnt from Hell. Up and down, how you feel inside?

After talking for a while, Dr. listened to your heartbeat. and You were really kicking fast about 140-150 per minute. GrandMe said you're gonna be a beautiful girl, another "cai tin" so what? Mom is about 106 lbs now.
  • Looking for a house was pain in the rear, putting presure on Dad's shoulder. Don't you know that I have a slope side shoulder ?
  • Sometime in this week, Mom got out of bed and you kicked her badly that she cursed herself (Ma may), ha ha ha ha.

Dad went to Sibu Island ,ocean kayaking around 20 acres island, snorkeling in a deserted (dead) coral, beautiful white sand beach.....You and Mom travel up to Santa Ana to see GrandMa back from Vietnam. Your Mom got a lot of new clothes. She just can wait to try on and show the world that she's carrying you inside (balut inside).
  • Mom even ate 'mam' just to throw all up later. Shame on her.
  • Week 13, Monday, Oct 11, 1999. Dad came back from Singapore to see Mom rolling inside the maternal dress!! She complained about the back pain, stomach ache, ....

  • Week 14, Monday, Oct 18,1999. Your mom started feeling the first three kicks from you. I don't know that're real or not. Only Believe In ! Hope that Mom would sleep soundly all night. But you're getting heavier and made Mom hurt everytime she turned around sideway. Very soon, Mom would not be able to ro chim anymore !!!!!
OK, As soon as we went to bed, we started to play with you. remember how Dr. Beaumont did last time, Mom pressed hard onto you. Guess what? You started to react, and somehow made Mom in pain. Then she grabbed on to you and squeezed. Dad had to open her finger out 'cause the more she squeezed the more she felt the pain. Mom half cried half laughed and both of us were still wondering what happened to you...Are you mild tempered or short-tempered? Were you hurt? so on and so on
By the way, the Z28 need oil leak fixed. After they fixed that, they closed the lid onto the tool. OK, they gave Dad a brand new Toyota Solara for a few days. Cool! Tuesday night, oct 19, We all went to a pregancy class in style.

  • Wednesday, Mom got better. we went to see DR. Beaumont 3:15pm. As always, he pushed on you to hear the heartbeat. This time it came about 130/min. Mom complained with me about how hard Dr. pushed on you. Dad talked Mom into floating over water. That's good, Dad thought so.

  • Week 16, Monday, Nov 01,1999. Not much going on. Mom started breathing heavily for sometime. We went swimming every lunch. Everytime Mom tried to push hard, she felt painful. Mom wanted to feel your position so she touched her belly and looked for you all the time. And everytime you answered, she hurted. What can I say?
  • On Friday, Nov 05 1999 about 4:30pm, Mom called Dad at work and said that she saw you moving inside her belly. What were you doing? I bet you're not gonna remember.
  • Week 17, Monday, Nov 08,1999. So you started kicking now and then and made your Mom sad and happy, whoknowwhen! Mom had to go to restroom more. Mom played with her belly more and more and felt your position. Dad joked that you're like your Mom, never sleep straight, always turn around and around thru out the night. Weekend, we drove GrandBaMe to see GreatGrandMa and went to Lucky Lane to pay tribune to Di Hanh. Sunday, Uncle Alpha and Aunt Belle came back from China and brought us a stone stamp and a couple of jade wrist bracelet. They were too big, huge that an elephant can walk thru !!(kidding) Dad and Mom went visit K-mart to see baby furniture and stuff.
Mom had AFP test sometime this week.
  • Week 18, Monday, Nov 15,1999. Mom kept ren hu hu all night cause you kept kicking her (what i was told). Thursday afternoon, Mom tried to clean the bath tub and kitchen. She slipped on the bathroom floor but was able to catch the toilet but the cover felt on her hand and scratched her hand. Mom "cho" qua and call Dad at work, and Dad was typing this message right at this moment. Then GrandMe called over to eat banh canh.
Saturday, we all drove up Santa Ana to see Great GrandMa & your "Ba Ngoai". Dad had a chance to taste the pomelo fresh from the garden. After coming home from GrandBaMe, you kept kicking Mom and made her cry for the first time. Mom had coined a word for your action 'Go`'. And you know how Dad soothed both of you and your Mom. Dad saw Mom's Belly glowing, so he put his very cold feet there and cool you down. What a guy!

Your heart kept beating strong.
The AFP(alpha-fetoprotein) test result was back. Everything read good. The possibility for spina bifida (a birth defect of the fetal brain and/or spinal cord) was real low, and for Down’s syndrome is 1 per 4000. (normal for woman age of 35 and over is 1/270). So amniocentesis test was not reccomended. want to read about the test, click here
Mom made an appointment to have ultrasound (sonogram). It was Monday, 12/6/1999 at 11:00am. Dad and Mom bought a vhs tape for your show to the world.
It was Thanksgiving week. A lot of activities were going on. Everybody in the family came back home. We had a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Then took a ip in the spa that Dad fixed the pump (not Mom). Then the next day we spent time chatting with each other, then had dinner at Phuong Trang Restaurant where we have 7-course Beef and some sizzling dishes. But Dad parked the car at disabled spot ! Oh well, just miss a pair of skis for another year.
However, Mom could not drag herself and you for long. She got cold badly that We had to went see doctor the next morning. She's so sorry for you. How could you understand your Mom. Dad bought her a steamer inhaler to help her breathing. That day was the commemorative day for Dad's BaNoi. So Mom could not help out. Dad had to make many trip back and forth for Mom have a chance to 'cung'. By the way, Mom is the only one daughter-in-law that dad's OngNoi and BaNoi knew.
That night, all of Dad's bros and sis had a long-late conversation about the next 5-year plan for the big family. Life is pretty complicated. However I hope that you will take it lightly as your Mom. Or else, you have to be sophiticated. The plan did not sell, and we're forced to use an option that did not meet "smooth transition" priority. Just a step back, and I could not get what I really want to achieve.
Mom got better the next day, though. You still grabbed, moved, or did something that Mom cried out loud in pain sometimes.

  • Week 20, Monday, Nov 29,1999. Mom got a good sleep last night. But in the morning, you grabbed something that Mom 's in pain again. Dad couldn't help but pad her in the back. Mom counted how many time you pulled the string and will knock on you later . Beware!
12/02/99. Mom 's 17 1/2 Birthday. If you don't understand, just ask Mom. Remember to cover your head first ! Mom got a dozen of classic Roses. Beautiful! However, Mom just dipped in the bathtub too long that you did not want that, and you voiced your opinion by got Mom throwing up right after that. what a fetus! OK. Mom's pretty happy. She got many greeting cards, got to see 17th James Bond "the World is not enough". When she saw beautiful Sophie Marceau , you kicked her a lot. Uh Huh!!. Then we all went eating out at Italian Restaurant where Mom order shrimp primevera, and Dad ordered seafood alfredo...So you're like Mom "vit di xa"
